Hanauma Bay

Hanauma bay is the best-protected cove with a diverse population of marine life and a beautifully kept coral reef that extends all through ought the bay and into deeper water. This bay is actually a crater of an ancient volcano who's exterior collapsed sending ocean water rushing in.  It is a great place for people who are new to scuba diving or snorkeling, even people with more experience will be able enjoy the beauty this bay has to offer.  But if snorkeling or diving isn’t really your forte, this bay has a great sandy beach perfect for sunbathing, picnicking, socializing, or simply just relaxing.  You can even take part in the many hiking trails Hanauma has to offer.  These trails extend along the coastline of the bay providing hikers with breathtaking views.  In fact, I went on one of those trails and took pictures overlooking the bay, which I have included down below.

I have been to Hanuma many times with my family in the past.  Although the idea of swimming with marine life kind of scares me, I had a great time just floating around observing all the fishes.   I saw a lot of the same fishes, whose species I am not sure of, and occasionally came across bright orange fish and fish as big as my head that sorted of made me squirm with fear.  But what really scared me was when I found an eel that jumped out at me while I was exploring in deeper water.  But on the bright side, I have never seen or heard of sharks ever being in this bay, most likely because the ample coral reef, which makes it impossible for sharks to enter the bay.  I have also never had problems with being drowned by waves in the past but there is a limited amount of parking, so if you are planning to go try to get there early.

This bay is located at 7455 Kalaniana'ole Highway, Southeast O'ahu.  It is currently open every Saturday form 6 am to 10 pm and closed every Tuesday.  There is a $1 parking free and a $5 admission fee for 14 years or older.  Children under the age of 13, Hawaii residents, and military stationed in Hawaii with proper Id get free admission.  There is a long paved walkway leading down to the beach but there is an optional shuttle bus available.  There is a $1 fee for this shuttle but it is Handicap accessible.  There is a strict no pets policy and alcoholic beverages are not permitted.  Because this is a Marine Life Conservation you may not: fish or feed fish, harm fish, or step on coral reef.
